A celebrated silent opera comes to life through silent film.
"La Symphonie Fantastique," by Hector Berlioz, is a treasured
work of the classical canon. After Berlioz fell desperately in love
with a young actress, he composed the celebrated "Symphonie Fantastique,"
to impress her and prove his love.
Berlioz had envisioned his masterwork as a sort of "silent opera."
In fact, he considered it essential that the public read the plot before
each concert, so they realize the work's crucial dramatic components.
Here, that story is brought to life through an outrageous and powerful
montage of images. Fragments from the works of such directors as Lang,
Murnau, Pabst, Griffith, Clair, and Luis Bu_uel, as well as many other
lesser-knowns are united, combining to tell Berlioz's tale.
The resulting film is an often mind-blowing and eternally fascinating
work, though not a documentary except by the most outlandish stretching
of the term. Nonetheless, we are delighted to be showing it alongside
BERLIOZ'S TRIP, which is a documentary, in a special program presented
with the Silent Film Society.
Carlos Rodriguez was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1966. He studied at the
