Olga Kitova may be the only honest person in Belograd, Russia. Now,
she's going to pay for it.
Far from the metropoles of Moscow and St. Petersburg, Belograd has followed
a different trajectory of Post-Soviet transformation. Here, statues
of Lenin remain extremely prominent, and there is not even the pretense
of an independent judiciary. Journalists should fear for their lives
if they even dare investigate the most obvious of show trials.
Olga Kitova either doesn't hold that fear, or she doesn't care. For
she has made herself the scourge of Belograd's power class. And when
a blatantly ridiculous rape case emerges, she takes up the cause. Will
it be her last?
Udo Lielischkies was born in 1953 in Cologne, Germany. He studied economics
and sociology at the University of Cologne. He formerly worked as Brussels
correspondent for Westdeutscher Rundfunk, and since 1999 has been its
Moscow correspondent.
